WHAT’S THE BIG IDEA?

murmur provides both graphic design services as well as the sale of wood carved goods–both of which aim to bring joy to the mundane by designing with the needs, desires, & niceties of the human experience in mind.

Who’s to Blame for all This?

I’m Riley Urquhart–the founder and sole operator of murmur studio. Originally from the Greater Toronto Area, I moved to Thunder Bay in 2021 after completing my Honors Bachelor’s in Design (HbDes) from the York/Sheridan Program in Design.

I grew up spending half of my time in my Poppa’s shed helping build and/or fix whatever he dreamt up the night before, and the other half in my Mum’s hair salon watching as she married her craft with unmatched warmth in conversation. Murmur is a reaction to this. While some of my work is made of pixels and some of carbon, I am always certain to build them through equal considerations of craft as well as care.

WHY CALL IT MURMUR?

Starlings fly in these phenomenal amorphous swarms called murmurations. These assemblies can comprise anywhere between hundreds to millions of birds–all moving independently within what resembles a breathing cloud of smoke.

In his sundown years, murmurations seemed to follow my Poppa. Nearly every drive during those years led us to the side of the road watching the swarms of birds with shared childlike wonder. Murmurations remind us of the beauty in true collaboration as well as aid us in rediscovering a sense of wonder in creation–both of which are notions I strive towards in my work at murmur.

LETS make something nice together.

Whatever the project, however big or small, if you have some pixels that need to be pushed, give me a call! (or email)
