Intention & Outcome

This accordion style foldout was created as an exercise in allowing myself to relinquish a degree of control in the creative process. This idea is echoed in the name of the project through the undefined process between “intention” and “outcome”.

The premise of this piece is based around a site (www.petittube.com) which randomly selects a youtube video that holds zero views. Then, using a random number generator, I fed it the total length of the video in seconds and had it randomly select a number from that range.

I would then do a blind counter drawing of the first frame in that second of the video, turn that drawing into a stencil, and then use a plotter to create a clean cutout of that stencil

This piece remains a very useful experiment for me to look back on, as it reminds me to critique how easily accessible tools in Illustrator can define the way my work looks and feels. By renouncing some level of certainty in our work, we are able to stumble upon outcomes we may never have thought of on our own.

The process

For this assignment, I was also tasked with closely documenting the process of creating my final piece. I decided to keep myself very honest in this process by recording every single step and making this video to further explain my thinking.
